Imagine a city made of just about anything – pencils, beads, paper clips, plastic bottles, even pizza holders.

That’s the type of city a group of middle schoolers at Langtree Charter Academy designed and created, eventually winning the Future City NC State Championship for the second year in a row.

Future City is a nationwide competition among 6-8th graders that challenges students to design a city of the future while solving problems of today. The 18 Langtree students designed their winning city, called “Pureza,” to focus on waste management.

The team will represent their state and school at the national Future City competition in Washington, D.C. from Feb. 12-17.
